Non-volatile marine and non-refractory continental sources of particle-phase amine during the North Atlantic Aerosols and Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES)

Abstract. Amines were measured by aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy during the North Atlantic Aerosols Marine Ecosystems Study (NAAMES) cruises. Both AMS non-refractory (NR) amine ion fragments comprising CxHyNz family FTIR non-volatile (NV) primary (C–NH2) groups typically had greater concentrations in continental air masses than marine masses. Secondary sources of NR identified consistent correlations with nitrate, f44 (the contribution signal at m/z 44 (CO2+) to total organic (OM) signal), chromatography (IC) non-sea-salt potassium (nssK+), radon for most NV group particles diameters <1µm showed large contributions from a source that was significant measurements wind speed, chlorophyll (chl a), seawater dimethylsulfide (DMS), chloride, IC sea salt as well alcohol both <0.18 <0.5 µm particle samples likely have biogenic secondary associated strong acid groups, which are not present <1 samples. The average seasonal ranged 27±57 % 73±152 early spring 53±76 47±68 winter. These results demonstrate complementary can be used together investigate variety amines environment.
